Chronic Illness : Take charge of your health
Living with a chronic illness can be challenging, but with the right support and resources, it is possible to manage your condition effectively and maintain a good quality of life. Medical aid plays a crucial role in this journey, providing access to treatments, medications, and regular check-ups that are essential for long-term health. However, managing a chronic illness goes beyond just having medical aid, it also requires active participation, awareness, and responsibility from patients.
The Importance of Knowing Your Medications Â
One of the most critical aspects of managing a chronic illness is understanding the medications you are prescribed. Whether it’s insulin for diabetes, anti-hypertensives for high blood pressure, or anti-retrovirals for HIV, knowing how your medications work, their correct dosages, and potential side effects is vital. Premier Service Medical Aid Society covers the cost of medications for chronic illnesses for its members.
In fact, all PSMAS members are entitled to a chronic medicines benefit, which they can access each month when collecting their medication supplies. This benefit is separate from their general medicines benefit, which covers prescriptions for non-chronic illnesses. The chronic medicines benefit is specifically designed for members managing chronic conditions. One requires to register their chronic medications at nearest PSMAS offices or email chronicregistration@psmas.co.zw. For registration of chronic medication, one provides a valid prescription and a completed chronic registration form, which the doctor also completes.
The Value of Regular Check-Ups Â
Regular check-ups are another cornerstone of managing chronic illnesses. These appointments allow healthcare providers to monitor your condition, adjust treatments if necessary, and catch potential complications early. All PSMAS plans cover these visits according to benefit a member has access to depending on their scheme, making it easier for patients to stay on top of their health.
Skipping check-ups or delaying them can lead to undetected issues, such as worsening symptoms or the development of secondary conditions. For instance, a diabetic patient who neglects regular blood sugar monitoring might face complications like kidney damage or vision problems. Regular visits to your doctor ensure that your treatment plan remains effective and tailored to your needs.
The Dangers of Sharing Drugs and Self-Diagnosing Â
In some cases, patients may be tempted to share medications with friends or family members who have similar symptoms. This is a dangerous practice. Medications are prescribed based on an individual’s specific medical history, condition, and needs. What works for one person could be harmful to another. Sharing drugs can lead to adverse reactions, incorrect dosages, and even life-threatening complications.
Similarly, self-diagnosing and self-medicating can be risky. The internet is filled with information, but not all of it is accurate or applicable to your situation. Only a qualified healthcare professional can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend the appropriate treatment. Relying on unverified sources or advice from non-professionals can delay proper care and worsen your condition.
